I Need A Fully Managed Server Recovery Strategy But What Solution Works For My Credit Union?

Replicator V3 vs V4

If you are looking for a fully managed server recovery that will make you feel confident that it will actually work – then you are probably looking in the right place. Ongoing Operations now offers two flavors of the Replicator, V3 and V4. Let’s look at the major differentiating characteristics between V3 and V4 to better understand which solution fits the needs of your Credit Union.

Replicator V3

Our fully managed server recovery for clients with physical servers, virtual servers, or both. Replicator V3 allows clients to get their data offsite with RPOs (recovery point objectives) as low as 15 minutes. In this version of the OGO Replicator, OGO provides the client with a local appliance that sends data directly to the OGO offsite storage environment in our data center. By using this type of architecture, the efficiency in recovering data and restoring servers increases drastically from previous versions of the Replicator. The V3 Replicator also has the most advanced ability to view granular backups over a long period of time. As your replication images are created, they are then condensed at the end of the week into a weekly backup, at the end of the month the weekly backups are stacked into a monthly backup, and monthly backups can be kept forever. Replicator V3 works great for recovering individual files either locally or offsite or for recovering all of your windows servers in a big event. Ongoing Operations performs live recoveries or test recoveries on about 100 servers a week – so we are there to help you through.

Replicator V4

Our newest Replicator version for clients who have migrated to a fully virtual environment. With Replicator V4, clients now have the highest possible RPOs as data is replicated in real time. This is accomplished by taking replication images at the hypervisor level allowing data to be taken offsite and removing the need for a local appliance. Replicator V4 uses the Zerto software platform which you can compare with other virtual based replication software platforms here: https://ongoingoperations.com/blog/2014/05/credit-union-use-veeam-zerto-disaster-recovery/. Currently, the V4 backups are held for 5 days and then new images begin to overwrite the oldest backups. Backups can be stacked into monthlies, although each monthly requires a full seed image to be taken which quickly drives the data storage costs up over time. While we expect this to improve in the near future, we have also noticed that it is extremely rare for an organization to need a recovery point older than 5 days. Normally, whether it is a single file, or an entire server that needs to be restored, the organization usually knows about it immediately, making the need for older backups obsolete.

Whether you are still using physical servers, have plans to go fully virtual in the future, or have already moved to a fully virtual platform, Ongoing Operations would be happy to discuss in more detail the pros and cons of V3 vs V4 Replication.
