What is the diffference between Replicator V2 and Replicator V3?

replicator

Perhaps you are an existing OGO Replicator client on V2.  Maybe you are thinking of moving to the OGO Replicator platform.   Either way, as Ongoing Operations rolls out version 3 of the Replicator to our clients, many want to know “What is the difference between Replicator V2 and V3?”

The OGO Replicator combines software, hardware and support to make sure that your Windows servers are backed up locally and offsite and recoverable whether it is a single server that dies or all of them.

Hardware Differences

In Replicator Version 2 a pair of appliances (sometimes called the 3100 pair) are matched one at the client site and one at one of our HotSite facilities.  Each appliance can backup to 15 Windows servers and up to 4 TB of data.  While the most common replication strategy is transmitting daily backups off-site for most servers the appliances can send data every 15 minutes so your most critical servers are never more than 15 minutes behind.   In a local or isolated server event the server is recovered on the appliance (at either location) in about 15-30 minutes.    About 2 to 3 servers can run on the appliance.  This works great for your most common recovery, a single server failure, but isn’t so great for a DR Test or when you have to recover all of your servers.  In that scenario, OGO engineers move the data from the Appliance to our Hosting Platform which can add time to the recovery process. There are two big limitations with Version 2 in OGO’s opinion.  First, when you get above 15 servers you have to buy a whole new appliance.  Second, having to move the data adds time that slows your RTO (recovery time objectives).  Otherwise the solution has been rock solid for our clients.

The Replicator Version 3 generally requires a replacement of the local appliance at the client site.  However now OGO architects a specific hardware platform that can scale by adding more disk and is matched to the number of servers and amount of data you actually want to protect.  This enabled us to change the pricing model to a per server per month model which is much more scalable for both clients and Ongoing Operations.   The second major change is that the remote appliances are removed.  Now, your data is backed up directly to the OGO Platform which means we have much higher efficiency in recovering the data and restoring servers.   (Version 4 is currently in beta and improves this even more).

Online Backup or Data VaultingSoftware Differences

The Replicator relies on three main software components.  First, an agent that takes the backup and stores in on the appliance.  Second, the software that makes sure the data gets offsite efficiently and securely (aka WAN transport).  Lastly, the component that combines the incremental and base image and can boot a physical machine into a virtual machine or permanently restore a server’s data to a new physical or virtual environment.   This core functionality doesn’t change between V2 and V3.  What does change is that there are now more granular options for taking monthly backups and creating your End of Month backups.  In addition, there is more functionality around transmitting your data off-site every 15 minutes.  Finally, the fact that it is now one appliance instead of many enables you to see all of your backups in a single pain of glass style as opposed to having to login into multiple replicators.

 Support Differences

Nothing has changed here.  We still make sure the solution is working, your backups are offsite, and that we can recover your data.  We consistently run a series of Preventative Maintenance checks to make sure everything is working and with 100’s of servers recovered annually, when we find a problem, we make sure we fix it for all of our clients…before it causes you a problem.
