Does your credit union need Replicator V3 or V4?

Many credit unions wonder what the differences are between Ongoing Operations’ Replicator V3 and V4 products.

First off, let’s discuss what the replicator suite does. The replicator suite helps facilitate the backup of your credit union’s servers as well as the transport of that data offsite for recovery in Ongoing Operations’ secure data centers.

The major difference between V3 and V4 is that V4 was built primarily for the recovery of virtual servers. We used our original product, V3, when there were multiple mixed environments for our clients’ server architectures. These days, however, most environments are 99-100% virtualized, so we find ourselves using the Replicator V4 product more frequently.

A second difference between the products is that their recovery times are quite different. In V3, we store physical images of backups and then push those physical images to new servers for recovery. In V4, we have a live streaming version of the virtual server ready for instant recovery.

Furthermore, both products have different archiving functions. V4 is a live stream of the product with a 30 day retention, while V3 is an archive forever. Because of this, certain instances do merit using both products together. For example, when both a permanent data archive and a fast recovery time are important, you would want to use both products.
