The differences between business continuity and disaster recovery

Companies, regardless of industry or size, are susceptible to natural disasters that can stop productivity in its tracks or destroy mission-critical data for good. MSPmentor’s C.J. Arlotta recently highlighted the differences between a business continuity plan and backup and disaster recovery initiatives.

According to the writer, business continuity cannot consist of just one solution. Instead, such an approach prepares an entire firm for potential disasters with a plan that will help a business recover should it experience a disruption. Such protocols determine how an organization will maintain operations during these events, as well as what actions employees must take.

BDR, on the other hand, is focused solely on how to recover data during or following a disaster, Arlotta explained. BDR plans identify how a company will retrieve missing or lost files should a disruption strike.

Cloud computing is one option that can help organizations ensure important data is always accessible. Cloud backup is available through the Internet, allowing staff members to remain productive even if a company’s office is closed. Also, since information is located off-site, this content is safe from on-site disasters, keeping critical files out of harm’s way.

The cloud’s calling card is its vast functionality, which makes it possible for organizations to replace outdated IT systems, enhance employee collaboration and improve efficiency. The use of hosted environments will likely grow in popularity as companies look for ways to remain prosperous. A survey of more than 1,250 business and IT executives conducted by IT nonprofit CompTIA found that more than three-quarters believe technology is important for corporate success.

CompTIA also found that data storage, cybersecurity and backup are top priorities among those polled.

“Emerging technologies such as cloud computing continue to see adoption gains as well,” said Tim Herbert, CompTIA research vice president. “More than half of responding companies say they are either experimenting with or fully using cloud computing solutions.”

Few solutions offer as many benefits as cloud computing, which has become not only an important technology for IT departments, but also a strategic option for business leaders. Continued corporate success, data protection and productivity improvement are all possibilities thanks to the cloud. The fact that security concerns regarding the use of cloud-based environments are dissipating bodes well for a market that is expected to reach new heights.
