Credit Union Cloud Readiness – Service not Servers

ncua it examination, Credit Union cloud readiness

Credit Union cloud readinessWe field tons of questions a week regarding the technological research necessary to determine a Credit Union cloud readiness profile. And while bandwidth, applications, servers and security are very important – I’ve found one area that unless tackled first your efforts will be for naught. Today’s post is about Credit Union cloud readiness as it applies to your Technology team.

Do not let the old saying “don’t work yourself out of a job” be your cloud strategy mantra. One thing technologists are not known for is a fear of change. In fact, many of us enjoy the adrenaline rush of a new gadget or project. The driving factor behind this common characteristic is an insatiable appetite for knowledge. So if you are a Credit Union IT leader and are intrigued by cloud strategies but just can’t get comfortable with how it may impact your staff , this post is for you.

If you need to start at the beginning, our CEO, Kirk Drake provided an in-depth look at the potential staffing changes in his series on “cloud” – the post can be found here. In this post, he describes how the changes may impact Credit Unions of all sizes. The part I found seriously intriguing was his statement regarding the skills set change ” transition away from IT Infrastructure and Networking skills into business technology skills such as business intelligence, report analysis and creation, and mainly focusing on helping the Credit Unions technology achieve key goals.” In other words, service not servers! Let’s look a little closer at those:

  • Business Intelligence – I don’t know about you but aspiring to deliver information that helps drive business decisions is what makes life meaningful. Um, okay so i exaggerate but  I think you’d agree that it would be seriously cool to know that your efforts shaped the next Credit Union paradigm shift.
  • Report Analysis and Creation – You may already have a significant resource pool for this on your existing team. Key tools like Cognos, crystal reports and other core dependent report writers will become more and more important for your team to know,

And lastly instead of looking at the “cloud” as the demise of your IT team, look at it as a chance to evolve into different skill sets that more closely align with your Credit Union goals. Remember these?

  • Member Retention
    • Convenience Services/Channels
    • Trust Relationship – Security of Data, Privacy of Information
  • New Member Acquisition
  • Improve operational efficiency

Our next post will go in-depth on how you can begin preparing your staff for the cloud through a Credit Union cloud readiness assessment.
